Since June 2020, Uber has made some drastic changes to the way it provides support to its drivers. As a result, they closed all the Uber Greenlight hubs in Australia, with no immediate intention to open them back up.

Whether you want to join Uber or are already a driver-partner, the Uber Driver app is currently your best tool to reach out to Uber.

Here’s what you need to know about Uber support in 2021

As a general rule, Uber is now pushing most communication via the Uber Driver app. Whether you want to join Uber as a driver or you’re looking for support as a driver-partner, the app is your main tool for signing up and getting in touch.

If you want to join Uber in Australia

1. Download the Uber Driver app

The first step is to download the app, because this is where most of the sign-up process happens.

You can also create a new account on the Uber website, but you will still need the app for the rest of the sign-up process.

  • Sign up with a new account, and select the city in Australia you want to drive in
  • Select the type of delivery you are interested in  – UberX or Uber Eats
  • Select the type of delivery you are interested in  – UberX or Uber Eats
  • Read any documents related to GDPR consent, agree that you have read them and that you accept your personal information to be shared by Uber. These documents refer mostly to the background check, necessary for the sign-up process.
2. Upload required documents

Depending on what you selected previously (city, type of work, whether or not you have a car), you need to upload several documents, for both you and your car. The app describes exactly what you need and how to upload everything correctly.

Better yet, we can help you get started, free of charge.

You can submit a request online, which is normally processed between 10 – 14 days, depending on each state. When your results are ready, NCC will automatically submit a copy to Uber, so you don’t need to upload anything to the Uber Driver app.

4. Submit and pass the VEVO (right to work) check

If you don’t hold an Australian Passport, Australian Birth Certificate, or Australian Citizenship Certificate, the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) check is a mandatory part of Uber’s sign-up process. It’s done via the Australian Department of Home Affairs and proves your right to work in Australia.

At a minimum, you need to provide your passport or ImmiCard details and one of the following reference numbers:

  • Transaction Reference Number (TRN)
  • Visa Grant Number
  • Visa Evidence Number

Complete your own VEVO check

NCC will send your results directly to Uber.

5. Complete a driver safety education course

This is an online course that teaches you about your legal obligations as a rideshare driver and helps you make sure that every trip is safe and welcoming.

You can complete this course in the app, at any time during the sign-up process.

6. Get a vehicle inspection

This is the final step before Uber can activate your account. If the car you plan to drive with Uber meets your city’s requirements, the next step is to arrange a vehicle inspection to confirm it’s roadworthy.
