Below are the driver requirements to join Uber in Sydney.

    1. An eligible car

For a car to be eligible for Uber, it must be nine years or less from the current year’s changeover date, the 30th of June. For example, before the 30th of June 2017, an Uber eligible car must be a 2007 model or newer and after the 30th of June 2017, an Uber eligible car must be a 2008 model or newer.

To be eligible for Uber, the car must have its NSW Registration, have four doors with external handles, mustn’t have damage or missing pieces of the body and has seat belts for the driver and at least four passengers.

    2. Full NSW driver’s licence

You must have held a full Drivers Licence in Australia for at least 12 months in the last two years. Before signing up to Uber, you will need to ensure you have a valid NSW Drivers Licence.

    3. Passenger Transport licence code

Every Uber driver in NSW requires a Passenger Transport licence code from Uber. If you don’t already have this licence code, you will need to apply which requires copies of the following documents:

    • A valid NSW Driver’s Licence
    • A valid Passport or Birth Certificate
    • A Criminal Background Check

The application cost of a Passenger Transport licence code is $22 and will take between 3 to 7 business days to be processed.

    4. Car insurance

You’ll need comprehensive or third-party property insurance in order to drive Uber. Make sure your name, car make and registration, policy expiration date and type of cover are clearly visible on the document.

    5. Uber application

You must be over the age of 21 to become an Uber driver as well as owning a smartphone (iPhone 4s or newer, Android 2013 or newer).

    6. Car inspection

To renew a car’s registration in NSW that is over five years old requires an inspection. If the car passes this inspection, it is valid for driving with Uber.

If your car is less than five years old, it would not have required a registration inspection. Cars less than five years old need to be inspected by an Uber-approved site to be eligible. You can find a full list of Uber-approved sites here.
