If you plan to work with Uber or Uber Eats and you’re not an Australian citizen, you need to get the VEVO check, also known as the right to work check. This is a requirement when signing up with Uber.

To make this process easier for you, we have gathered all the information you need to know about the VEVO check.

What is VEVO?

VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) is a tool created by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to verify immigrants’ visa conditions. VEVO provides details about the following:

  • Type of visa granted
  • Visa emission and expiry date
  • Period of stay for the visa holder
  • Visa condition (what the visa holder can and can’t do)

Who can access VEVO?

VEVO can be accessed by the visa holder, the employer, the education institute the visa holder is attending or applying to and other government agencies.

When do you need to use VEVO?

The VEVO is mainly used when getting a job, as your employer needs to be informed about your visa and working conditions. It can also be helpful when looking for a rental property to confirm the period of stay in Australia or when applying for a scholarship.

IMPORTANT: When you sign up to work with Uber, it’s also mandatory to have the VEVO check.

What is VEVO check for Uber?

For those who don’t hold an Australian Passport, Australian Birth Certificate, or Australian Citizenship Certificate, the VEVO check is a mandatory part of Uber’s sign-up process. It’s done via the Australian Department of Home Affairs and proves your right to work in Australia.

Does everyone need to do a VEVO check for Uber?

No. You don’t need to do the VEVO check if you’re an Australian citizen.

If you migrated to Australia before 1990 and never travelled abroad in the meantime, you might not have a searchable record and need to apply for an electronic visa record.

IMPORTANT: If you’re a visa holder and got your visa after 1990, you must get the VEVO check.

How to get the VEVO check for Uber?

There are two ways to get your VEVO check for Uber — using the Department of Home Affairs website or a private agency.

Department of Affairs website

You can complete your VEVO check directly on the Department of Affairs website. The first step is selecting the travel document type you have. VEVO accepts the following:

  • Passport
  • ImmiCard
  • Convention travel document – also known as a Titre de Voyage
  • Document for travel to Australia (DFTTA)
  • PLO56 evidence card

For the next step, you need to provide one of the following reference numbers:

  • Transaction Reference Number (TRN)
  • Visa Grant Number
  • Visa Evidence Number
  • VEVO password

The final step is entering your date of birth and passport or ImmiCard number. After submitting all the information, you get your VEVO details on the website and can download them as PDFs or send them to your e-mail address.

You can also view and email your visa details using the mobile app myVEVO, available on App Store and Google Play.

Private agencies

Some businesses might require getting the VEVO check done through the private agency they work with.

TIP: You can get the VEVO check for Uber while completing your background check application.

Uber uses National Crime Check (NCC) as their background check partner, so you can also use them for the VEVO check at no cost. You just need to add your Passport details and upload a photo of your Passport while completing your background check. NCC will send the results directly to Uber.

How do I check my expiry date on VEVO?

When requesting a VEVO check through the Department of Affairs website you can check your visa emission and expiry date.
