Uber driver requirements in Canberra, ACT
1. Full ACT driver’s licence
You must have a full AU driver’s licence with at least 12 months of driving experience. If it’s not an ACT licence, you’ll need to convert it before signing up.
2. An Uber-eligible car
For a car to be eligible for Uber, it must be nine years old or newer (from the current year’s changeover date, the 30th of June). For example, before the 30th of June 2020, an Uber-eligible car must be a 2010 model or newer and after that, 2011 or newer.
The car must also have its ACT registration, four doors with external handles, seat belts for the driver and at least four passengers, and no damage or missing body pieces.
You’ll need comprehensive or third-party property insurance in order to drive Uber in Canberra. Make sure your name, car make and registration, policy expiration date, and type of cover are clearly visible on the document.
Your car must have a valid ACT roadworthy certificate to be eligible for Uber. If you want to use your personal car for ridesharing, you’ll need to book an appointment at a certified inspection centre and take it in for a check-up.
3. Uber application documents
To become an Uber driver in Canberra, you must be 21 years or older, have a smartphone that’s compatible with the Uber Driver app (iPhone 4s or newer, or any Android device released since 2013), and get the following paperwork ready:
Working With Vulnerable People card
You’ll need to WWVP registration card from Access Canberra to drive Uber in ACT. Follow these steps:
- Fill in the Working with Vulnerable People Application form
- Visit your local Access Canberra Service Centre where they will take a photo of you and verify your identity
Access Canberra will assess your application and post the WWVP card to you. Processing this application usually takes 4-6 weeks.

The application costs around $72, and you’ll need to reapply every 5 years.
The next step is to book an appointment and complete a Commercial Driver’s Health Assessment form at your local GP. This should cost between $50-150 depending on your GP, and will be valid for 5 years.
You’ll also need to apply as a sole trader through the Australian Business Register and create an ABN number.
To drive Uber in Canberra, you’ll need to upgrade your ACT driver’s licence to a D-condition at Access Canberra.
