1. An Uber eligible car
For a car to be eligible for Uber, it must be nine years old or newer (from the current year’s changeover date, the 30th of June). For example, before the 30th of June 2020, an Uber eligible car must be a 2010 model or newer and after that, 2011 or newer.
The car must also have its VIC registration, four doors with external handles, seat belts for the driver and at least four passengers, and no damage or missing body pieces.
2. Full VIC driver’s licence
You must have a full AU driver’s licence with at least 6 months of driving experience within the last two years. If it’s not a VIC licence, you’ll need to convert it before signing up.
3. Driver accreditation from the CPVV
You’ll need to apply for a Driver accreditation at the CPVV (Commercial Passenger Vehicles Victoria) to drive Uber in Melbourne. Here’s how:
- Certify your Proof of Identity documents (your full VIC driver’s licence and your passport/birth certificate or your right to work if you’re not an Australian citizen)
- Download and print this form and book an appointment for your medical assessment at your GP. Take your proof of identity documents with you so your GP can verify them
- Complete your online application with CPVV
Processing Driver accreditation applications usually takes 10-14 business days.
4. Car insurance
You’ll need comprehensive or third-party property insurance in order to drive Uber in Melbourne, Victoria. Make sure your name, car make and registration, policy expiration date and type of cover are clearly visible on the document.
5. Uber application
You must be over the age of 21 to become an Uber driver in Melbourne, Vic, and have a smartphone that’s compatible with the Uber Driver app (iPhone 4s or newer, or any Android device released since 2013).
Apply online to become an Uber driver-partner.
